Christmas Star Cookie Tutorial

This tutorial was made with Paint Shop Pro 6, but can easily be done in Paint Shop Pro 7. You can download a free 30-day evaluation copy of PSP7 HERE.

You can download decorative sprinkles for these cookies HERE.

PSP6 Users, or PSP7 If you do not have a star shape in your preset shapes, click HERE to download a ready-made cookie image in psp format. Then skip the first 4 steps.

Open a new image, 200x200, with a transparent background. Set your forground color to #deac7c. Now turn off the background color as well as any texures. The color palette should look like this:

Click on your shape tool .
Set your tool options to this star shape (or another like it), line width=5, antialias checked, line style=solid line.

Draw a large star in the middle of your image.

Click on the magic wand on the left toolbar . While holding down the shift key, click on the rim of the star and the inside of the star. Holding down the shift key will let you click on them both.

Click on the flood fill tool . Now left-click inside the star to color it a cookie color.

** PSP 6 USERS, OR IF YOU HAVE NO STAR PRESET SHAPE, START HERE **

On the top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/ Inner Bevel. Use these settings: bevel=1, width=9, smoothness=40, depth=3, ambience=0, shininess=62, angle=315, intensity=25, elevation=54

On the top toolbar, click on Selections/Modify/Contract. Contract by 7.

Change the forground color to yellow.
Click on the fill tool, then click inside the star selection to paint it with yellow icing. Do another inner bevel with the same settings as before (Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel). Your image should look like this:

Add a layer by going Layers/New Raster Layer on your top toolbar. Name the layer 'sprinkles'. Change your forground color to green. Click on the fill tool and then click on the star selection to fill it green. Your image should look like this:

If you cannot already see your layer palette (like below), then hit your 'L' key (lower case) on your keyboard. To the far right of the palette, there is an arrow by the word 'normal'. On you sprinkles layer, click on the arrow, and then choose the word 'dissolve'. It should look like this:

To the left of the word 'dissolve', there is a white tab/arrow like in the diagram below. Left-click-hold that tab and drag it to the left until the number changes to 15.

You will notice the green layer on your cookie now looks like sugar sprinkles. Play with the look a little, dragging that tab (previous step) left or right until you get the look you want.

When you get the look you want, hit Ctrl+d on your keyboard to deselect. All finished! Your cookie should look like this:

You can tube your cookie for future use, and to redistribute it.
On the top toolbar, click on File/Export/Picture Tube. Since there is only one image to tube, use the settings below. Name your cookie whatever you want. You might want to start adding your initials to the front of all your tubes now, so you (and other people) can keep track of the ones that you made. I use prc_imagename to name my tubes.
