Christmas Stocking Cookie Tutorial



This tutorial was made with Paint Shop Pro 6, but can easily be done in Paint Shop Pro 7. You can download a free 30-day evaluation copy of PSP7 HERE.

For PSP7: Download this preset tree shape HERE and unzip it into your preset shapes folder. Make sure PSP program is closed (not running) when you install the shape.
For PSP6 and below (or if you have trouble using the preset shape): Click HERE to download a ready-made cookie image in psp format. Then, skip the first 4 steps.

Open a new image, 200x200, with a transparent background. Set your forground color to #deac7c. Now turn off the background color as well as any texures. The color palette should look like this:





Click on your shape tool .
Set your tool options to this stocking shape, line width=5, antialias checked, line style=solid line.





Draw a large stocking in the middle of your image.





Click on the magic wand on the left toolbar . While holding down the shift key, click on the rim of the stocking and the inside of the stocking. Holding down the shift key will let you click on them both.

Click on the flood fill tool . Now left-click inside the stocking to color it a cookie color.





** PSP 6 USERS, OR IF YOU HAVE NO STAR PRESET SHAPE, START HERE **

On the top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/ Inner Bevel. Use these settings: bevel=1, width=9, smoothness=40, depth=3, ambience=0, shininess=62, angle=315, intensity=25, elevation=54





On the top toolbar, click on Selections/Modify/Contract. Contract by 7.

Add a layer by going Layers/New Raster Layer on your top toolbar. Name the layer 'sprinkles'. Change the forground color to red.
Click on the fill tool, then click inside the stocking selection to paint it with red icing.





Now change your forground color to yellow. Click on paintbrush tool with these settings.





Decorate cookie with yellow lines around the heel area. Change color to green and add a few green lines around the heel area and around the top area. Your image should look like this:





Duplicate the layer: If you cannot already see your layer palette (like below), then hit your 'L' key (lower case) on your keyboard. Click on your sprinkles layer (your middle layer). Right-mouse click on the word 'sprinkles'. Choose 'duplicate.'



Now your layer palette should look like this:





To the far right of the palette, there is an arrow by the word 'normal'. On you sprinkles layer, click on the arrow, and then choose the word 'dissolve'. To the left of the word 'dissolve', there is a white tab/arrow like in the diagram below. Left-click-hold that tab and drag it to the left until the number changes to 30.





Click on 'copy of sprinkles' layer. Click on your magic wand .

Green: Now while holding down shift key, click on all of the green areas. Contract selection by 2. Hit the delete key on keyboard. Hit Ctrl+d to deselect.

Yellow: Now while holding down shift key, click on all of the yellow areas. Contract selection by 2. Hit delete on keyboard. Hit Ctrl+d to deselect.

Red: Now while holding down shift key, click on all of the red areas. Contract selection by 2. Hit delete on keyboard. Hit Ctrl+d to deselect.



Let's make some piped icing around the edges.

Green: Now while holding down shift key, click on all of the green areas again. Give it an inner bevel by going Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel on the top toolbar. Use these settings. Hit Ctrl+d to deselect.



Yellow: Now while holding down shift key, click on all of the yellow areas again. Inner bevel with the same settings. Hit Ctrl+d to deselect.

Red: Now while holding down shift key, click on all of the red areas again. Inner bevel with the same settings. Hit Ctrl+d to deselect.

All finished! Your cookie should look like this:





You can tube your cookie for future use, and to redistribute it.
You need to merge all your visible layers before you tube it. Go to Layers/Merge/Merge Visible.

On the top toolbar, click on File/Export/Picture Tube. Since there is only one image to tube, use the settings below. Name your cookie whatever you want. You might want to start adding your initials to the front of all your tubes now, so you (and other people) can keep track of the ones that you made. I use prc_imagename to name my tubes.





Here is an award for all of your hard work, you deserve it! You can put it on your website, link it to this website if you want to, or print it out and tape it to your monitor.
