Sweetheart Diner Wallpaper

I tried to write this tutorial so it is as easy for beginners as it is for seasoned PSP artists. For more detailed instructions, hover your mouse over each screenshot image below. Please remember to save often, and empty your command history occassionally (file/empty/command history) to keep your PSP from locking up and your pc from needing rebooting.

For this tutorial you will need:
Paint Shop Pro7: Get it Here
Sweetheartdinerstuff.zip file: Get it Here and Here.

Unzip the .sel files into your Paint Shop Pro selections folder, the .bmp files into your patterns folder, the .tub files into your tube folder, and the .jsl files into your Paint Shop Pro shapes folder. My folders are at:

c:\program files\jasc software inc\paint shop pro7\selections
c:\program files\jasc software inc\paint shop pro7\patterns
c:\program files\jasc software inc\paint shop pro7\tubes
c:\program files\jasc software inc\paint shop pro7\shapes

1. New Image
Open a new image 1024x768 with a transparent background. Change your forground color to #FFF1F1.

Click on the top 'styles' box to change the color When this window pops up, type in the color #FFF1F1 where shown in this image

2. Wall
Create a new layer by going Layers/New Raster Layer on your top toolbar. Name it "wall". Use your paint bucketThis paint bucket fills an entire area, and is found on your left toolbar. to flood fill the background with color #FFF1F1. On the top toolbar, Selections/Select All, then Effects/Texture Effects/Blinds. Use these settings:

width=5, opacity=12, color=#FF4040

Click on this color box to change the color. When this window pops up, type in the color #FF4040.

3. Counter Wall
Open a new layer, and name it "counter wall". Top toolbar, go Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine counter wall.sel. Flood fill with color #F8D6E6. Top toolbar, go Effects/ Texture Effects/Texture. Use these settings:

texture=brick (mine is texture #4), size=25%, smoothness=9, depth=3, ambience=0, shininess=20, intensity=44, elevation=30, color=white(#FFFFFF), angle=315.

4. Floor
Open a new layer, and name it "floor". Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine floor.sel. Flood fill with any color (it does not matter which color you use, it will change).

You have 3 choices for doing the floor:

Flood fill with a wood patterned image
~OR~
Go Effects/Texture Effects/Sculpture and use any preset wood setting you like,
~OR~
Go Effects/Texture Effects/Sculpture and use these settings:
pattern=oak, size=100%, smoothness=6, depth=18, ambience=0, shininess=0, angle=315, intensity=50, elevation=30.

Top tool bar Effects/Texture Effects/Sculpture. I used these settings:

5. Baseboard
Open a new layer, and name it "baseboard". Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine baseboard.sel. Flood fill with any color (it does not matter which color you use, it will change). Flood fill with the same wood patterned image that you just filled the floor with in step 4.

On your top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Use these settings:

bevel=(fourth row, far left), width=12, smoothness=16, depth=4, ambience=0, shininess=0, angle=315, intensity=50, elevation=30, color=white(#FFFFFF).

Let's fix up the far left and far right ends of the baseboard. Click on your clone brush on your left toolbar. Set your tool options to these settings:
shape=square, size=19, hardness=88, opacity=100, step=5, density=100.

You might want to zoom in to see this. Line up the square outline of your clone brush on a good spot right beside the warped end. Right click with your mouse. See below. Now Line kup your brush outline over the warped end. See below. Now left click with your mouse, and watch the warped end disappear! Now do the same with the other end of the baseboard. See below.

Find a good spot of baseboard near the warped end. Right-mouse click. Carefully move your mouse to the end of the baseboard, taking care not to move the mouse up or down. Now right-mouse click. It should look like this image. If not, Cntrl+z on your keyboard to undo and try again. It takes a little practice.

6. Counter
Open a new layer, and name it "counter top". Top toolbar, go Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine counter top.sel. Flood fill with color #F3C3D9.

Open a new layer, and name it "counter front". Top toolbar, go Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine counter front.sel. Flood fill with color #EB9BC1.

7. Counter Trim
Trim 1:
Open a new layer, and name it "counter trim". Top toolbar, go Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine counter trim1.sel. Flood fill with color #EB9BC1. Top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Use these settings:

bevel=(first one one the top), width=1, smoothness=10, depth=5, ambience=0, shininess=77, angle=315, intensity=25, elevation=40, color=white(#FFFFFF).

This same counter trim bevel setting is used for all 3 counter trims. You may want to save it as 'counter trim' for your future use.

Trim 2:
Top toolbar, go Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine counter trim2.sel. Flood fill with color #EB9BC1. Top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Use the same settings you just used.

Top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow. Use these settings:
vertical=3, horizontal=0, opacity=90, blur=4, color=#404040

To change the color of the shadow to #404040, click on the color box. When the window pops up, type in #404040. Use this same setting for Trim 2 and Trim 3.

Trim 3:
Top toolbar, go Selections/Load from Disk. Load prc ssvalentine counter trim3.sel. Flood fill with color #EB9BC1. Top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel. Use the same settings that you just used.

Top toolbar, go Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow. Use the same settings you just used. Control+d to deselect, or Selections/Select None to deselect.

8. We need to merge all layers except the wall layer. Leaving the wall layer behind the merged layer will allow you to put something behind the counter later without alot of fuss. If you cannot see your layers toolbar, type l (lower case L) on your toolbar now so it will appear. On your layer toolbar, click on your counter wall layer, or any other layer EXCEPT the 'wall' layer. Now click the eyeglasses icon on the 'wall' layer to make it not visible. Your layer toolbar should look like this now:

Your layer toolbar should look like this.

On your top toolbar, go Layers/Merge/Merge Visible. You should have 2 layers now, 'merged' and 'wall'.

Click on the eyeglasses on the 'wall'layer to make it visible again. Now right-click on the 'merged' layer and choose 'rename' to rename it. Rename it 'counter'. Your layer toolbar should look like this:

Your background should look something like this:

Here is the background for the diner, shown at 25%.

That's it for the background, now on to the people and the details! You might want to save a copy of your work so far so you can use it later to design your own soda shop/candy shop/cafe/whatever.

Now is a good time to save again and to empty your command history and clipboard again. Go file/empty/command history and file/empty/clipboard. Doing this will cut down on the memory you are using, cutting the chances your PSP will lock up and make your reboot your computer.
